A Spring Saturday

Well the weather has been absolutely fantastic this weekend.

Today I checked out the JC Raulston Arboretum.  They were having a plant sale, and a birdhouse competition.  My favorite birdhouse was a paper machete “banjo” made by a kid who wanted to represent NC’s southern music — it had pictures of Katy Perry and other pop stars pasted all over it lol.  I hope to get a post with some plant pics up soon.  The bearded irises are spectacular right now.

I got some patio gardening done today. Finally planted the baby lettuces I bought many weeks ago from the farmer’s market.  They look like they might survive.  The one I planted with my wandering plants in my hanging basket a while ago is doing great.  I also spread out my four baby spinach plants into two separate window boxes.  Mixed some compost into the top layer of soil for my blackberry bush and asparagus plants.  My blackberry bush has flowered, so maybe I’ll see some fruit soon.  That would be exciting.

My carolina wren chicks are getting mighty big — all five of them.  I don’t see how they all fit in that nest, I would be losing my mind.  I got worried on Easter because the mother wasn’t sitting on the nest, but then I read that after about a week she stops day-brooding.  I thought my neighbor’s party and screaming kids scared her away as I didn’t see her all day, but she popped back up later in the evening and was very busy bringing worms to the babies.  They are getting mighty chirpy now, and I think they all hate me.  Can’t wait to have my porch back.

Hard to see in the picture, but they actually look like real birds looking back at me now.  They are so crammed in there, and retreat when I approach, that it is very difficult to get a decent picture.

This afternoon I went on my first long ride in a while.  I rode around the RTP, up to Lake Betz near CISCO and back.  This was the first time I rode that far around here on the trails.  Back in the fall I was riding on these trails, but I would get worn out pretty quickly.  For whatever reason, the trails aren’t mostly flat like the roads.  They have some steep inclines, and some quick changes.  At first I hated it, because I would tire quickly.  I’d turn around at the top of the first hill.  But today I was hardly fazed.  I even made it up one hill in 4th gear.  I could have physically ridden for much farther, but my butt got sore pretty quickly.  I need to get some of those cushioned pants for distance riding now that I have some endurance.  I like that I can ride on the trail for strength training, or ride on the road for endurance training.  Once I get away from my street, biking in the RTP is pretty safe.  And I enjoy waving to the other cyclists.  I’m not sure how my endurance has increased though as I have only done like 1 or 2 long rides this year, mostly I just ride less than the mile everyday to and from work, a very quick ride.

Just a gal from the mountains of North Carolina. I love to travel and explore nature. So far, I have been to several areas of the US (mainly East Coast and Southwest), Ireland, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, and Mexico. My passions are anything to do with the environment and art/photography/DIY hobbies. As of December 2010, I have a B.S. in Environmental Technologies. Not sure what I'm going to do with it yet, but get a job travelling and saving the world. The blog I keep (demintedmint.wordpress.com) reflects my passion for the environment by addressing many pressing issues. Also, lots of other random little things that I care about.
